LA Times review by Kevin Thomas.
What's amazing is how Icelandic filmmaker Olaf de Fleur Johannesson managed to start out making a faux documentary on Filipina transsexual Raquela Rios and then turn it into a poignant narrative with The Amazing Truth About Queen Raquela."

Hollywood Reporter review by Stephen Farber.
Bottom Line: A fascinating, nonjudgmental portrait of Philippine ladyboys.

It is a fascinating hybrid much like Raquela herself, who is a young "ladyboy," aka a transsexual.

The Amazing Truth About Queen Raquela
Starring Raquela Rios, Olivia Galudo, Brax Villa
Unrated, 80 mins - ***1/2 (of 4 stars)
Raquela is a ladyboy (male-to-female transsexual) prostitute living in Cebu City, Philippines. With dreams of a life in Paris and true romance, she seeks opportunities and a man via the internet. After several letdowns, life takes a turn for the better when she's hired to provide content for a naughty ladyboy Web site. Raquela makes connections and is able to pursue her goals, heading to Iceland and eventually Paris thanks to the Web site's smitten American owner, Michael. Icelandic director Olaf de Fleur Johannesson artfully and entertainingly blends documentary with narrative storytelling: Most of the people and events depicted are real or recreated. We root for, and sometimes pity, Raquela through the various indignities and calamities she endures (and cringe when she mentions her aversion to condoms) throughout her journey. Playing herself, Raquelawhose voice is strangely shrill due to a childhood illnessis likeable, as is her clique of fellow ladyboys and friends. But the film's show-stealer is producer/actor Stefan Schaefer as the vulgar, selfish, yet occasionally altruistic Michael. LAWRENCE FERBER

A unique little film opens this week in NYC and LA that is definitely worth checking out if you're in either city and are looking for a reprieve from the junk cramming the multiplexes lately.

LA City Beat review by Annlee Ellingson.
Documentarian Olaf de Fleur Johannesson films this fairy tale in cinema verite style, shaping narrative elements around the real-life Raquela. This aesthetic lends the production authenticity one senses that the events could be, and are, happening somewhere.

IFCFilmNews.com
Offering up the most unlikely fairytale you're ever likely to see, Icelandic filmmaker Olaf de Fleur Johannesson draws on his documentary background with this endearing low-budget, semi-improvised Cinderella story.

Sá að LA Times dómurinn er flokkaður sem "rotten" á Rottentomatoes.com þrátt fyrir að vera afskaplega jákvæður, þekkirðu ekki einhvern sem getur lagað það - þá myndi hún líka komast yfir fersku 60 prósentin þar ...
